2.A: Ensure that, by 2015, children everywhere, boys and girls alike, will be able to complete a full course of primary schooling
Here is how Egypt measures up against other countries in adult literacy:
Egyptian Literacy According to the World Factbook:
Definition: age 15 and over can read and write
Total population: 73.9%
Male: 81.7%
Female: 65.8% (2012 est.)
So about 15% more males are literate than females and about 34% of females are illiterate.
In the UN Progress Report on Egypt from 2010, we read, "Despite the great strides made to achieve universal education, issues related to inequality of access to education and education quality remain central..."
"The presence of students from poor families is at its highest rate in the primary stage. The pressure of household poverty and poor educational facilities takes its toll as students advance in the education system, and lowers their achievement levels."
This document also states that primary education is compulsive in Egypt and that the state is working on making higher levels of education compulsive.
This is interesting. Will forcing kids from poor families who may not have time to go to school be helpful?
The UN Development website summarizes, "Egypt is very likely to achieve universal primary education for all boys and girls in a timely fashion."
